synopsis
Discover early 20th-century Ireland in Brian Friel's seminal family drama.
It’s 1936 in County Donegal. In a small village, five sisters do all they can to alleviate their poverty-stricken lives. They also need to raise Michael, a seven-year-old boy, and their Uncle Jack, their elderly relative who is back home after 25 years as a missionary in Uganda. The five Mundy sisters — Kate, Maggie, Agnes, Rose, and Chris — must also find their place in the world. When the festival of Lughnasa arrives, Pagan and Christian views collide. In a turbulent political time, these sisters must fight for each other, and show themselves what it means to love and survive.
Brian Friel’s Dancing at Lughnasa play premiered at Dublin’s Abbey Theatre in 1990. It later transferred to the National Theatre.
